LECTURE

To start off, we did a Self-Introduction in front of the class. Mr. Martin briefly explained Project 1. He also asked us whether, for Final Project, we would either prefer to do visual effects or stop motion.

PRACTICAL

3 VISUAL EFFECTS & STOP MOTION EXAMPLES

1. VISUAL EFFECTS

For this week's lecture task, we are asked to research examples of visual effects & find 3 examples from the online resources. Moreover, writing reasons to back up one's selection. But because I still do not know what I would like to do for the final project yet, I have decided to research both styles of video; Visual Effects & Stop Motion. For example, the reasons could be based on various categories such as :

- Style (Color/Angles/Focal point)
- Art Direction (clear goals & objectives of video// building particular aesthetic)
- Character Design (full creation of a character's aesthetic, personality, behavior, and appearance)

VISUAL EFFECTS EXAMPLES

a.) Running Late? | MAGIC OF THE MONTH - March 2020 (Timeframe: 0.44 - 1.16)

Reasons for selection:
There was good story development for this video, not to mention that the narrative was going at an appropriate pace. It was also enough to continuously leave the audience curious about what was about to happen next. For instance, when the phone was low on battery & he was trying to find a plug point. Moreover, the ending was unexpected as well which left a light & cheerful impression when the clip was over. Lastly, the Sound Design was well-planned. For example, the reverb sound effect shows that Zach was inside the mobile phone.

Reasons for selection:
To start off, the plot was relatable to the audience & out of the box. The idea of doing chores can be exhausting & stressful to many but Zach managed to turn the situation around with a positive demeanor. Next, with a  seamless transition during post-production, the magic stunts that the character pulled became very believable. Moreover, the use of colored lighting during the evil vacuum scene helps indicate an intimidating mood, resulting in an easy interpretation of the story. Lastly, the character's personality was fun & playful, allowing the audience to feel relaxed.

Reasons for selection:
My 3 reasons for selecting this short film would be the lighting, appropriate humor, interesting plot & conscious camera angles. Firstly, the warm lighting used in most of the scenes sets the mood & ambiance which aids in making the audience feel comfortable & secure. Next, the cinematographers incorporated light humor into many of the scenes. For example, simple concepts that are theoretically possible but practically impossible were successfully achieved with the help of magic. Lastly, an interesting plot with a few plot-twist along with well-thought-out camera angles enhances the narrative and makes the viewers feel as though they are actually watching a real movie.

2. STOP MOTION VIDEOS

Reasons for selection:
I specifically enjoyed the cheese slicing part of the video. The filming & editing was very seamlessly achieved. They also managed to incorporate real-life objects with their own twist of waffles & coffee using Lego.

Reasons for selection:
I picked this video because of its simplistic, unique style as well as the sound design. First off, the craftmanship on the plasticine elements was extremely detailed & proportionate, making the video come to life. Not only that, the designer took the minor factors into account such as the recoil action & vibration when the object hits the ground. All these elements combined together bring about a great animation.

Reasons for selection:
I chose this video mainly because of the antonymic sound design. For context, the sound effects used for the piece of corn are opposite of what an ear of real corn sounds like. As a result, it captured the audience's attention without much effort. Next, the camera angles during the establishing shot & the mid-plot convey a clear objective to the audience. For instance, the character is in a very tight & confined space. This helps the viewers to understand the storyline effectively. Besides that, the skeleton character was fun to watch because it had a very realistic reaction compared to humans. This helps audiences to relate themselves to the story & better remember it.

CLASS EXERCISE 1- EDITING VIDEO CLIPS

First, we have to download the footage from Google Drive. After that, import it into Adobe Premiere Pro under the Sequence Tab. We then started compiling the clips & later exported them out.

CLASS EXERCISE 2- WATCH MUNICH 2005 FILM

As we watched the movie, we ought to observe the Story Structure & Sound Design aspects before discussing in class.

1. STORY STRUCTURE

a.) Beginning- given the mission to murder 9 out of 11 Arab shooters involved in the Munich murder
b.) Rising Action- Starting the killing spree
c.) Climax - Partners were assassinated
d.) Falling Action- tried to kill Salameh but failed
e.) Resolution- returned to Brooklyn with mental trauma (kept on thinking his family would get killed)

2. SOUND DESIGN

  • When they were about to set off the bomb which connects to the telephone, one of their target’s daughters went back into the house. As the team leader & his accomplice ran back to tell the others, the entire scene was silent. Sometimes no sound is the best sound.
  • The gun shooting part was when they were hunting down 3 guys.

Fig 1.3.4 Example of Scene With Good Sound Design, Week 1(29/8/22)
  • Sound effects of kids running in the background when Avner visited the “Papa”- immerse the audience into the scene with background sound.

Fig 1.3.5 Example of Scene With Good Sound Design, Week 1(29/8/22)
    • Cars passing by- sound travel from right to left ear- indicates the movement of the motorcycle in a different direction.
    • Subtle sounds of lighting during their feast after they have shot the girl.
Conclusion: This movie takes into account the minor sound/noise object makes- sprawl that around each scene & you create a damn good movie.

    WEEK 2

    LECTURE

    Fig 2.1 Lecture Slides, Week 2 (5/9/22)

This week, we learned about camera angles as well as various composition styles. One of it was the Rule of Thirds. We have touched on this topic in one of the previous modules from last semester called Digital Photography & Imaging.

Mr. Martin said that for 3D solidarity, it is better to have a corner in the composition. E.g have the subject be positioned in the center of the corner for visual interest & dynamicity. Also, adding implied lines into the frame & direct the viewer's eyes to the focal point.

Never cross the 180-degree line as it confuses the audience.

    CAMERA ANGLES
Medium Shot- Top of head to Waist
Medium Close-Up Shot (MCU)- Head (Cut off) to Shoulder
Close-Up Shot- Head (Cut off) to Chin & Below
Extreme Close-Up Shot- Parts of the face only e.g eyes, chin, etc

    PRACTICAL

    SHOOTING EXERCISE: FRAMING

My friends and I took turns being a model for this exercise. For me, it was my friend, Riko. Below is the list of camera angles we have to shoot as well as the other requirements during the shoot itself.

    POST-PRODUCTION

During the editing phase, I imported the clips & compiled them together. Next, shorten the clips to 5 seconds and add the necessary captions. In order to make the video more interesting, I then included music and video transition such as "Film Dissolve".

PROJECT 2: EDITING PRACTICE 1 (LALIN)

Also, for this week, cut-up footage of Lalin, as well as a few graphics, was provided by Mr.Martin in the google drive folder along with a pre-recorded tutorial on how to edit in Adobe Premiere Pro software.

After completing the compilation, I noticed that with sound effects, the video would be even more impactful. Therefore, I went to FreeSound.Org & downloading some object sounds such as typing, phone notification sounds, paper pulled out from an envelope, and more.

I also tried color correcting the footage as some of them were either overexposure or too cold in color.

    WEEK 5

    LECTURE
    Fig 6.1 Lecture Slides, Week 5 (26/9/22)

In today's class, I figure out that one can cross the 180-degree line but not when there is a conversation going on. Before showing the clip that crossed the line, have a close-up of an object of anything really as a cushion or transition so that audience would not notice.

In the Short Film "Chocolate", the mother who was a bit racist was shot out of frame means that the director was not trying to make the film racist instead, it means that it could happen to any race; not just Malays. Not showing the mother, brings the viewer's focus to the two youngsters.

    PRACTICAL

SHOOTING PRACTISE AT THE PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO

For practical class today, we went to the photography studio at E1.01 & tried being a film production crew for a day. We got to experiment with the equipment for sound recording,  camera, tripod as well as clapper board. My team, we were assigned to base our shoot on Shot No.7. As for the script & storyline, we improvised it on the spot. During class, we also positioned our talents at the desired filming location & marked them using masking tape.

Fig 6.2 Examples of Shots, Week 5 (26/9/22)

Since the audio & clip were recorded separately, I combined the two in Premiere Pro. The following video was how it turned out.

    REFLECTION

I found that for one to reduce the snowballing effect of completing assignments towards the end of the semester, we have to be very consistent in doing it every week. Not only that, sacrificing certain activities that one always enjoy is essential to succeed in other areas. In terms of the VSP Exercises, I learned about more features from Premiere Pro which I did not know before. Since I already had experience with the software, I figured that doing the exercises was rather a piece of cake but I was wrong. Nevertheless, Mr. Martin has always been a kind soul and provided us with his feedback on our work which helps us realize the weak points of it and ultimately, makes us develop a design sense to be able to differentiate between good quality work a bad one.
