WEEK 1

LECTURE (WEDNESDAY)

In Wednesday's lecture, Mr.Martin declared that from next week onwards, lecture sessions will be on Friday. Hence, lecture and practical sessions will be back-to-back which makes it much more efficient and convenient for everyone. We also had to create an individual and shared group Google Drive, labeled with the projects for the semester.

LECTURE EXERCISE 1 (GROUP)

During the lecture session, Mr. Shamsul gave us time to create slides on different infographics. After the time was up, he chose a group to present their findings. Below was my group's introductory slides to infographics.

PRACTICAL

QUANTIFY & VISUALIZE DATA (10%)

The assignment brief, it says to quantify (count) your chosen items and arrange the objects into a presentable layout or chart. Take a picture and submit it! Mr. Martin has given us the option of choosing our own set of materials for the activity so I chose buttons. But then after that, I realized the buttons I own had too many variations so it was hard to narrow them down into a few categories. Later, I swapped the buttons for some coins so that it is easier to divide.

I did not get a chance to carry out this exercise physically on campus as I chose to attend class virtually that week. Hearing from my peers that went to the physical class, Mr. Martin also did not conduct this exercise that day. Hence, it was apparent that we had to do it at home by ourselves.

WEEK 2

LECTURE

FLIP 2: SAUL WURMAN’S L.A.T.C.H

In today's lecture, Mr. Shamsul instructed each group to create slides that briefly explain the meaning and usage of L.A.T.C.H. and provide examples of the respective infographics. Afterward, he picked a random group to present their work to the class. For my group, we continued using the same Google Slide document from last week and did our Saul Wurman's L.A.T.CH. Theory exercise there. We also divided the workload equally among the 6 of us and I was tasked to complete the 'Location' part of the slides.

LECTURE EXERCISES

Applying the L.A.T.C.H principle, each group has to present an explanation of the topic and provide examples or scenarios of what information is best utilized with each principle. For my group, I chose "L" which stands for Location, and searched for its explanation as well as examples of infographics that best utilize the concept.

PRACTICAL

INTRODUCTION TO AFTER EFFECTS (KINETIC TYPOGRAPHY)

Mr. Martin demonstrated ways to execute our Project 2: Kinetic Typography using the After Effects software. He advised us to be imaginative and utilize the design principles absorbed from our previous modules in the composition style. I chose to use my favorite typeface of all time which is the "Stretch Pro" typeface. I paired it up with the ransom letter typeface to give variety to the video. Next, I adjusted the clip on the timeline so that it matches the lyrics of the song within its duration.

Fig XX Arranging the Text, Week 2 (21/1/23)

Two null layers were added to the sequence, one layer for the words "So, so what." & "I'm still a rockstar". Later, all the text was connected to the parent element, and the 3D cube button was switched on. Essentially, what the null layer does is move every single text simultaneously.

Fig XX Adding Null Layer, Week 2 (21/1/23)

Later, all the text was connected to the parent element, and the 3D cube button was switched on. Animating the text was the most difficult part for me as initially, I began to feel lost after the null layer and had to rewatch Mr. Martin's tutorial.

WEEK 3

LECTURE (FRIDAY)

FLIP 3: MILLER'S LAW

Fig XX Lecture Slides, Week 3 (26/1/23)

LECTURE EXERCISES

For this week, we have to present an explanation of the topic and provide an example of how to best utilize this technique in terms of visual delivery for each of these approaches:

1- A well-designed infographic

2- UX/UI, web, app, games (screen-based basically!)

3- Processes (you can refer to Project 1 brief as an example or other topics)

REFLECTION

To be very frank, the number of exercises given in relation to the duration of our short semester was absurd. Even for lecture sessions, we were only given approximately 10 minutes of the lecture from Mr. Shamsul and 40 minutes to complete the slides which contain an explanation of our topic. On the bright side, I was able to absorb and recall each topic clearer after the weekly lecture tasks.
