WEEK 1

SONG SELECTION
In this week's practical class, my group mates and I discussed Project 2 which was to create a Kinetic Typography lyric video. First things first, every member had to list down a few songs of their preference in the Google Slides document created. I also shared a couple of song choices during our group meeting so that the rest of the members could listen to the music and determine the genre of music we are going for. In the end, we leaned towards more of an upbeat song with an average repetition of lyrics to save us some time during the motion graphics part.

After everyone was done with their input, we voted for 3 songs each by playing a unique emoji next to the song title.

However, once we were done, one of our group members requested a clean song with no vulgarities and sexual hints in the lyrics due to religious reasons. Hence, we went back to square one and chose a new set of songs that matched the criteria.

The final song choice was Levitating by Dua Lipa

WEEK 2

RESEARCH ON ART DIRECTION

In order to finalize our art direction, we each drag a picture from the shortlisted mood boards and paste them onto the "Style of MV" board.

On the 18 of January, my teammates and I conducted a group meeting in the morning to discuss our art direction for Project 2.  We also touched on the song choice once again because the majority of us were not satisfied with our final song selection therefore our group voted again between the song, "Notion" by The Rare Occasions, and "Levitating" by Dua Lipa. Following the majority's vote, Levitating was the clear winner.

In order to finalize our art direction, we each drag a picture from the shortlisted mood boards and paste them onto the "Style of MV" board. One of the problems that we encountered was that we had two different picks which are 80's disco and 90s pop colors and it was hard to come to a middle ground.

Since the modern retro has more muted and less saturated colors, we initially thought to pick the 90s pop colors but tone it down a little. However, in the end, we just jumped the gun and chose the bright color palette as it gave more interest to the lyric video as compared to when it was just purples and blues (80s disco). Making sure that every member was satisfied with the final decision, a compromise was made whereby two dominant colors were chosen which were pale beige and violet. The violet was there to cater to the needs of members that had chosen the 80s disco shades of color. In the end, we get the best of both worlds.  Our overall style can be read from the Miro Board embed above.

WEEK 3

TYPEFACE SELECTION
Because it is the Chinese New Year holidays, no meetings were held this week but our group leader had instructed us to compile a few typefaces that would best suit the lyric video.

Fig 3.2 My Typeface Selection, Week 3 (26/1/23)

For this week, every one of my group members was tasked to compile a list of typefaces that best suits the theme and message of the song choice. I categorized my typefaces into two types which are primary and secondary typefaces. For the primary type, I compiled type families that were not too decorative but rather simple, clean, and have high readability. Since the secondary type was used sparingly, I went with the opposite of what the primary typeface would look like; more swishes, thicker, and more graphical elements. Its purpose was to emphasize words and their meaning. Besides, it gives more character and interest to the video.

DRAFT ANIMATION

Noticed the ball actually has to touch the words in order for the bounce impact animation to look more realistic.

I copied the coordinates of the y-axis so that the words had identical drop impact, making the animation look cohesive and united.

MOTION GRAPHIC ANIMATION CHART

Fig 3.4 Practical Slides, Week 3 (26/1/23)

Mr. Martin has already pre-assigned each of the students to complete a specific chart. I was picked to complete an animated pie chart in Adobe After Effects. In order to do so, we had to refer to slides pertaining to written instructions. The main function outcome of this exercise was to familiarise ourselves with the TRIM PATH function in the software.

WEEK 4

VECTOR CHARACTER ANIMATION

Here's the pathway on how to change the Canvas settings on Adobe Illustrator:

Windows> ArtBoard> Right Icon> Change Canvas Sizing

To increase the size of the shape while remaining center, press Shift + Alt & Drag the corners of the shape.

After adding the code for the wiggle effect, I then place keyframes to vary the waving motion of the character.

REFLECTION

PROJECT 2

I felt that Project 2 was rather fun and informative as I got to learn the basics of animating a kinetic typography MV video and brush up on my design knowledge. Our group leader, Alana also taught me the significance of picking a specific art direction first before starting on a project. This helps us choose the typeface, colors, mood, and art style easily and consequently, we do not have to worry too much about it. Not only that, I was more familiar with the After Effects software after this module which boosts my confidence in fitting into the workforce after I graduate.
