Overall Reflection

·        What have I learnt in this module?

I have learned that designers do not create random compositions in artwork and call it a day. It is much more than just aesthetic colors, shading, and proportions. In actual fact, it is more of the position of a focal point, framing, and most importantly, the effective use of design principles which then collectively turns artwork into a masterpiece. Besides that, I have realized that a design is not only fixated on one specific design principle but, many others as well. It is just that one chosen principle is highlighted more than others. However, this is not to say that the less noticeable principles do not possess a key role in pulling the artwork together. For example, I intentionally created a silhouette of Queen Elizabeth II through the usage of proximity on basic shapes (See Fig). Additionally, proximity also became the major reason the Queen’s silhouette was able to emerge from the background onto the foreground.

Another discovery I have picked up from Design Principles is that design does not have to be APPEALING. An artwork may appear ugly and dull but considering the strategic composition and layout of the subject as well as other supporting elements, it will be deemed a superior design.

·        What did I enjoy the most?

I really enjoyed the outcome of what I have created from each project. My high school self would never believe that I had created more than 5 digital illustrations on my own. Moreover, I absolutely adore the creative freedom given for this module. The thought of being able to project strange & peculiar ideas onto still blows my mind. I was not tied to any limitations besides making sure that I incorporated a few design principles onto my artwork but even so, the theme of our designs is solely decided by us, the students.

·        What did I not enjoy the most?

I dislike how fast-paced this design is set to be for this short semester. Due to the time constraint, only a week was assigned for each project which in my opinion, was never sufficient for trial and error. It was really just pushing out artworks without much room for quality control. Not only that, because of the Chinese New Year holidays, the assignments were suddenly back-to-back, and there wasn’t time to rest until the next task was due for submission.

·        What have I learned about myself through this module?

I am capable of much more than I thought. I have always stuck to the idea that I am not a great designer. But after completing this module, I realized that by drawing the line so quickly on activities that I have always deemed to be out of my forté, I was jeopardizing my own personal growth. But not anymore. This module presented opportunities for me to experiment with my existing skills and discover new ones.

·        What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

My perspective on my surroundings has definitely changed for the better. Ever since the project on Sense of Place, I have been more sharp-eyed and detail-oriented; noticing characteristics of living & non-living objects. For instance, while I was waiting for my mother at the gas station, an Indian woman with long luscious locks of hair passed the front of my car. It was as though she was running in slow motion. I observed everything about her; everything from the way her hair sways perpendicularly to the direction she was heading to the creases on her shirt.

However, on the other hand, I did not notice drastic improvements in my drawing skills as well as my coloring abilities. But perhaps I came into this module with an incorrect mindset; thinking that basic drawing, coloring & shading techniques were to be taught & assessed by the lecturer. Nevertheless, I hope to be able to brush up on the stated skill so that whenever an idea concept comes to mind, I could mentally sketch out the design and present it tangibly for everyone to see.

·        What could be improved in this module?

Firstly, hopefully, other students are able to experience the physical class because truthfully, I do not think that this module was meant for it to be conducted virtually in spite of the coursework modifications. As a first-year design student with no prior knowledge of design, I sincerely wished that there were more practice exercises that could develop the skill of identifying the applied design principle in an artwork. This is because even when I was not entirely familiar with every principle, I already needed to implement some of them into my artwork. I felt that if I had grasped a stronger understanding of the fundamental design techniques, creating a whole new composition from scratch would have been so much easier.
