WEEK 1

LIVE LECTURE

MIB BRIEFING

  • Do a comparative study on the culture so e.g if you study hip-hop culture which originates from
  • Africa side, then study the same culture but in Malaysia
  • Do online netnography if you do fully online research
  • Do not think of the final output first; instead, do the rationale and identify the research questions, objective, and topic first
  • Half of the marks go to process work; how you arrive at that particular idea
  • Ms. Anis encouraged the final outcome to be done digitally instead of physically
  • Push your creativity; create something out of the ordinary
  • 1 rationale and 3 detailed artworks or 3 rationales for 3 artworks also can

WEEK 2

  • Miro board or PowerPoint
  • Start compiling your research
  • Put in the team group channel

PROJECT 1: PROPOSAL

WEEK 1

RESEARCH
For this assignment, we were given the theme of Visualism- Visual Culture and had to pick a cultural phenomenon or sub-culture(e.g hip hop, punk) to study. According to Brown University, the definition of Visual Culture refers to the "tangible, or visible, expressions by a people, a state or a civilization, and collectively describes the characteristics of that body as a whole."

WEEK 3

PROJECT PROGRESS

FEEDBACK FROM MS. ANIS
  • My part of the group work: Even though Ms. Anis liked the idea of focusing on the design aspects of the Viking ships, she felt that the visual study from that area lacks quite a bit. For example, the carvings, color of sails, and boat design should be further explained in terms of cultural importance. Not only that, the possible ideations were not thought out properly with regard to their execution.
  • Overall: Ms. Anis prefers Culture 3 which was the Chinese Architecture by Hadiya & Riko. The research was done with careful thought and consideration of its outcomes. She suggested that Idea 2: Guidebook Design with the concept of "Temple-Hopping" could work best. Additional outputs such as building a brand and a website could work too.

Saturday, 28th January 2023-  Group meeting to discuss after Ms. Anis's Feedback.

In today's meeting, we touched on these aspects:

1. Revisit the topic of Chinese Architecture and its possible ideations.
2. Merge and expanded ideas in detail
3. Delegated tasks for the next two days leading up to Tuesday's Proposal Presentation
4. Set a time and date for the next meeting

Since I was presenting the proposal next week, I currently do not have much to do. Hence, I volunteered to devise a storyline for Hadiya who is working on the sketches for Idea 3 (Children's Storybook). There are a total of 3 story plots that could potentially be used for reference in the storybook. The first two links are from a YouTube Channel whereas the last story plot was written by myself and essentially revolves around the purpose behind the architectural design of the Chinese temple which served to protect the people of that era.

COMPILED PROPOSAL DOCUMENT

This document contains all the researched information from each of our groupmates.

MIRO BOARD FOR DISCUSSION

We added ideas to the final outcome since our previous ideas were said to be unrelated to our chosen topic. In the board, we also discussed our plans for the data collection happening next week.

PROJECT 2: DATA COLLECTION (FIELD STUDY)

My groupmates and I have decided to visit two temples physically and conduct online research on the other three temples, totaling up to 4 temples.

The Chinese temples are:
1. Thean Hou Temple (Site Visit)
2. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (Online Research)
3. Kuan Yin/ Kwan Imm Temple (Site Visit)
4. Hong San Ti Temple (Online Research)
5. Chin Swee Caves Temple (Online Research)

FINAL PROJECT: FINAL POSTER

These are the slides that we have made consisting of our discussions and work delegations as well as our visual research and sketches.

FEEDBACKS

WEEK 3

FEEDBACK FROM MS. ANIS

Idea 1 Hanfu Movement Culture: Interesting, but the research provided does not give an idea of what the clothing signifies within the movement. Also, no idea about sketches. So not sure how you intend to push with this idea. Good context research, little input on how to push the idea as a project.

Idea 2 Viking Longships: A promising idea where you can look at how the design aspect of the boat signifies different functions of the boats [...tough enough to sustain pressure... while maintaining lightweight nature]. But, apart from function, the visual study that signifies cultural importance is very lacking i.e: need more inputs on the carvings, color of the sail, boat, basically what makes Viking Longships 'Viking'. Rough ideas are vague too. What do you intend to use in this isometric art? A poster? An animated gif? Provide a rationale for your proposed project output.

Idea 3 Traditional Chinese Archi. Culture: The strongest promising idea with plenty of cultural inputs [...see architecture that is deeply related to various aspects of a country]. Suggest that you work with ideation #2 where you look at different temples around Selangor and do a cross-study of the design inspiration from different locations in China. Rough output as temple hopping is good too. Can be pushed further into other output - branding, website, etc.

REFLECTION

Throughout the entire given assignments, I felt that I learned the significance of taking immediate action once an assignment was completed. For context, organizing a meeting right after a project has been submitted is crucial to being on schedule and avoiding procrastination. For Project 1, it was very hectic as some of our groupmates including myself were busy celebrating Chinese New Year. As a result, a week went by and we had not even finalized a topic. On top of that, the explanation given in the Module Information Booklet was rather vague, making us confused about what the assessment was. Thankfully, those that were not celebrating CNY stepped up and proposed a solid idea that was later chosen to be our final topic. For Project 2, visiting the temples in Malaysia opened my eyes to the sheer beauty and complexity of their design, not to mention, the symbolic meaning behind every characteristic. Doing it with friends makes it that much more enjoyable and we had a great day exploring snapping pictures and bonding together. Last but not least, the final project, I was fairly pleased with the final outcome that we had produced which was a lantern with implemented characteristics of each temple that we visited. Most of us did our part equally well in producing a beautiful and elegant outcome.
