REFLECTIONS

EXPERIENCE

Throughout the entire 14 weeks of Typography lessons, it is safe to say that I do not have an interest in dealing with type. Perhaps it is too early to tell whether it is a dislike because the beginnings are always tough. However, I felt very hopeless whenever Mr. Vinod did not fancy my designs because I personally believed that it was decent. Some of my peer's work was not to my taste but he liked it. Hence, I am not sure what he constitutes as 'great work' as he does not explain in depth what went wrong with mine. On the bright side, I truly believed that the materials taught in the Typography Module would be engrained in my mind as compared to the other modules due to the meticulous nature of Mr. Vinod. I like it honestly. I want to be able to step out of this module with a fresh perspective on type and I can absolutely say that I have achieved it.

OBSERVATIONS

Task 1 has shifted my mentality towards using type expression to convey a certain message. I always believed that making a certain word comes to life is practically meaningless because people only glance at your poster for a few seconds to absorb the necessary information and then leave. That was never the case. It was not about speed but memorability. If a heading was designed as a type expression, the readers had a higher probability of remembering the message of the poster than without. Next, Task 3A was particularly eye-opening because we had to deconstruct letterforms from existing typefaces. Through that process, I was able to recognize that each letterform was not entirely one stroke weight. Instead, they are of different widths at various sections of the letter. This had made me appreciate type designers more because of their attention to detail which is what makes the overall type family and typefaces suitable for specific purposes.

FINDINGS

I came to realize that in Typography, there was an abundance of rules we had to follow. If I did not study this module, I would have not known the importance of kerning & tracking, the ratio between grey area and white space, the significance of alignment in everything type, and more. On a different note, I found that Typography assignments are not something we could get done within a day or two. It is truly a time-consuming process because of the endless amounts of refinements and meticulous work. I think I have started to get the hang of the assignment flow and maybe found my rhythm to completing the tasks without stressing too much.
