DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE 02 - RECOLOURING  BREAKDOWN

PART 1

For this task, Mr.Martin instructed us to download the images from google drive and open them in Adobe Photoshop. I begin by using the marquee tool to crop a section of the image which shows even skin tone. Next, I used the brush tool to paint a stroke of 3 different colors ranging from the skin's highlight, mid-tone, and shadows. I repeated the same steps for the hair as well.

Taking the sample color from the previous image, I colored the girl's hair with it. I thought that the light brown looked somewhat unnatural hence, I changed the hair color to the darkest brown.

The skin color was too pale for my liking so I opened up 'Hue & Saturation' & saturated the photo. (See Fig 2.1.4)

Having purple lips was very unique in a sense because naturally, a human's lip is pinkish to red. I chose this color also because it complemented the skin tone of the model.

Not only that, but I also changed the background to a very light pink shade to tie the whole look together.

PART 2
After gaining knowledge and experience in recoloring from Part 1, we were tasked to search photos online for skin/hair references and this time, recolor the photo for submission. As seen in Fig 3.1, I particularly chose the hair color just because I was absolutely drawn to how the striking color pops on her skin. Whereas for the skin color, it would make more sense if it was a little tanner because the photo I chose to recolor once more was a Black ancestral woman. Therefore, in order to preserve & respect their culture, I went ahead and chose the same looking skin color as her.

I find this very scary without the face because the hair sticks out in different directions, giving the impression of a ghost that has visible hair.

The third picture on the far right gives an avatar vibe and I quite enjoy the gradient color from a hint of orange to dark blue to light blue.

REFLECTIONS

I loved this exercise because it could bring about many benefits in the future, especially if I decide to restore an old picture that is in black & white. I had the freedom to choose a certain type of style and mood for the character which was one of the factors that made this task quite enjoyable.
