PRACTICAL

DOUBLE EXPOSURE EXERCISE 1

Following the lecture slides provided by Mr.Martin, the first step is to mask out the woman from the photo, focusing more on fixing the model's hair using the 'Refining Edge Brush Tool'.

In Fig 2.1.2, the fill color of the solid layer behind the subject was changed into the exact grey color of the forest image's background.

Using the Brush Tool, 1/4 subject's face was revealed carefully. After that, the forest image was duplicated and flipped horizontally to resemble the body.

After that, I pasted additional elements such as the birds and clouds surrounding the main subject. Lastly, a gradient map layer was chosen and I played with the opacity of the colors.

DOUBLE EXPOSURE EXERCISE 2

After the practice run, we had to choose a self-portrait of our own as well as a landscape image in order to do the double exposure exercise once more.

Initially, I did not fully understand the criteria of the exercise thus my first attempt was more of a tattoo than an actual blending of two images on the entire self-portrait. Regardless, it looked pretty cool though.

FINDING LANDSCAPE IMAGES

Since I was wearing a Cheong Sam in the image, I figured that a traditional theme scenery would be suitable for this exercise. Later, I went onto Pinterest and compiled many pictures from Asian countries such as Japan & China because they sort of have similar architectural styles and moods.

ATTEMPT 2

I found this image that was captured at a place called Heaven's Gate in China. What caught my eye was the gigantic hole through the green nature which I could use in my portrait. That could allow for a deep symbolism whereby individuals that would like to be granted access to my mind come with time and patience.

Fig 2.4 Attempt 2, Week 5 (28/4/22)

Fig 2.4 is my Attempt in blending both images together. To my dismay, it did not turn out as how I imagined. The hole did not merge seamlessly with the background color, disregarding the effect entirely. I went ahead for another attempt with a different image.

ATTEMPT 3

Attempt 3 was much like Attempt 2 whereby the clipping image did not blend seamlessly with the background color no matter how many times I played with the color shades.

ATTEMPT 4

For this last attempt, I tried with this image and I particularly loved how it turned out despite the non-existent blend because of the two branches sticking out of the house. It was as though I possessed two devil horns on top of my head. I kept at it and proceeded with Fig 2.6.2.

Revealing parts of my body through the clipping image to make it more realistic.

I found another image that captures part of a geometrical building and I placed it on my upper body to illustrate that my head is coming out of it. It was as if I was 'wearing' that building. Lastly, I flipped the landscape image horizontally and created a 3-Dimensional view of the building in order to cover the entire body.

FEEDBACK
Mr. Martin told me that Attempt 4 was not great in terms of bringing out the surrealistic illusion. The image clipped, on the top of my head, was not giving the impression of a creature. Instead, it just looks like bad Photoshop work. Even the back of my head did not exactly match up with the lower half of my body.

ATTEMPT 5

I really tried to fuse the flower with the side of my face. However, that did not work so in the end, I scratched the entire idea and just proceeded with experimenting with other images.

The usage of these two images represents my longing to be in the breathtaking scenery.

REFLECTIONS

To be honest, this is my least favorite assignment because I find it extremely difficult to match the pose I had with the angle of the reference images. Most of them were shot in the front view and not angled to 45 degrees. It was tiring to refine this task considering the amount of time we had for each assignment but it was all worth it. I wasn't satisfied with the previous outcome but for this current one, I most definitely am.
